Windows 8.1 - Possible Printer Issue Fix (Error: There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper)

Got Windows 8.1? Having trouble with printing and getting error message?

I recently installed Windows 8.1 patch, and was having issues with printing with my printer drivers that I haven't touched prior to the patch upgrade.  And when I went to control panel to try to add the printer and re-install the drivers, I got a message saying "There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper"

If you have similar problem or issue that i described above, the following solution might work for you.  Keep in mind we are "NOT" responsible for anything that happens with your computer or anything, your are performing these steps at your own risk.

Open Computer Management.

1.  Hold down the windows key on your keyboard and then Press "R".  To bring up Run Window.  In the run window box, type: "services.msc"  (without quotes)

2.  Then in middle of your screen, where all the services are listed, find Print Spooler and Printer Extensions and Notifications.  (scroll down if necessary)

3.  Right Click on Print Spooler and click start and then also right click on Printer Extensions and Notifications and click Start.

If above method does not work try the following (steps 1-2 same as above):

Open Computer Management.

1.  Hold down the windows key on your keyboard and then Press "R".  To bring up Run Window.  In the run window box, type: "services.msc"  (without quotes)

2.  Then in middle of your screen, where all the services are listed, find Print Spooler and Printer Extensions and Notifications.  (scroll down if necessary)

3.  Right Click on Print Spooler and click Properties.

4. Click the Recovery tab and change your settings to match the following and click apply.

If the above steps are not working for you . Please leave a comment below and which printer make and model you have.  I would also recommend everybody to remove your drivers for printer and restart your pc and then install the printer drivers from manufacturer website instead of windows update automatically installing it for you and restart your pc.

  2. Thanks this worked for me, one note, the instructions to get to services are a bit more convoluted than they need to be, all you need is:

    1. Hold down the windows key on your keyboard and then Press "R". To bring up Run Window. In the run window box, type: "services.msc" (without quotes)

    Hope that helps :)

  8. Well, after 1/2 hour on the phone with Brother and one hour dealing with the Microsoft Help Desk, while I was chatting with them and figuring out that Microsoft was going to derail me to my computer manufacture, I googled the Error Message (endpoint mapper) and found this page. Sure enough, the tech said I was going to have to call laptop mfg and tell them they needed to make drivers compatible with 8.1!! I had no problems until I went from 8.0 to 8.1 on Monday. I followed your instructions and the printer is working perfectly!
    THANK YOU))

  9. Hello Everybody,

I am glad this post has been useful. I would like to add that I did do a fresh install of windows 8.1 few weeks and did not run into this same issue. Instead of going to manufacturer website to grab drivers I went into control panel to add device new devices and added a wireless printer (Brother mfc-j430w). It detected the printer in my network and installed the drivers it self and did not run into same issue.

  10. Thank you, Satwant! Your instructions worked perfectly the first time! I am able to access and print on my main B&W laser printer, which is wireless. My question is how to get back the ability to print on my color laser and color inkjet, which are wired to my main desktop pc. I have re-joined my homegroup which connects me to the desktop pc but haven't been able to get my Toshiba laptop to see any other printers. Any ideas? Thanks! Tricia :-)

  12. Hi again - Well, after spending a few hours going into every setting on my computer, I finally managed to get my laptop to see the network and to be able to use the printers that are hard-wired into my desktop computer. I had to make sure EVERY setting on the computer allowed EVERYTHING to be shared in the Homegroup. After this experience, I'm seriously considering moving to a Mac with my next computer. I am so done with Microsoft and Windows!!!

    1. Try the following it might fix that issue.

      1. Right click on start button, then select Command Prompt(Admin)
      2. Type: "CMD /K SC CONFIG SPOOLER DEPEND= RPCSS" (without quotes)
      3. Then press Enter

If anybody still having issues, I would recommend you to do a clean install of windows 8.1. And let it download all necessary drivers it self and then go to add new device to add printer. If anybody need help doing a clean install let me know i can probably put together a guide to so. Let me know in the comments.

    2. Make you select Command Prompt (Admin) and not Command Prompt. You need to run the command prompt as admin.

    3. The first thing to make sure is that your firewall service is started, this must be started

  20. It looks like this worked. It was a major frustration to lose my printers, particularly since we had a terrible time getting one of them installed in the first place. Thanks for this advice.

    1. I put up additional steps in my post above. Try that see if that helps. I have not tried it myself since I do not have this issue no more after I re-installed windows 8.1 fresh.
